You might have heard the words “gold vermeil” before but not quite sure what it is and how it’s different from gold plating. The short answer to that would be: gold vermeil is of higher quality than just regular gold plating. But let us walk you through it, there are some key differences!
Gold vermeil
Gold vermeil is a technique of gold plating that was originally developed in France in the 18th century. It’s a high quality form of gold plating, in which a thick layer of gold is coated upon sterling silver. In order to be considered as vermeil jewelry the piece has to meet certain qualifications.
-The base of the jewelry must be of 925 sterling silver.
-The gold plated layer must be at least 10k gold
-Be plated in gold at least 2.5 microns thick. (Micron = 1/1000 millimeter)
Whereas regular gold plated jewelry can have any metal base (for example copper or brass) and the layer of gold can be as thin as 0.5 microns. With this said, gold vermeil is the is the highest quality of plating you can get before considering solid gold!
Recycled 925 silver
The 925 sterling silver we use in our products is fine silver extracted from used metal products. After it being separated from the metals it’s mixed with, it’s melted down and reused to make our jewelry. We also take care of damaged Blue Billie pieces and send them back to our production, so that they can melt them down and make new jewelry.
All our jewelry are marked with “.925” its a stamp to signify that its real sterling silver. 925 silver (also known as sterling silver) contains 92,5 % silver and 7,5% copper.
